Are California’s 5 Micronations a Sign of Things to Come?

THE 5 MICRONATIONS IN CALIFORNIA COULD BE A SIGN OF A VERY DUBIOUS FUTURE

I must say I’m a little disappointed not to have already known that there are (so far!) 5 micronations in the state of California.  I mean, really, micronations the word doesn’t even come up as an error in any spellchecks!  But you may already be asking, what is a micronation, anyway?  For starters, not much.  At least, not yet.  But they may be a sign of things to come, if fictional positers like Neill Stephenson turn out to be prescient.  For now, micronations are just self-proclaimed sovereign states that nobody (as in, any government) recognize.  Another way of saying it is they’re kind of clubs, even if almost no one is a member.  Yet the 5 in California may be a sign of things to come.

ONE CYBERPUNK NOVEL, SNOW CRASH, SAW MICRONATIONS REPLACING FAILED NATION STATES EVERYWHERE

In Neill Stephenson’s novel, Snow Crash, governments like we know them have essentially fragmented into little or no relevance.  In the vacuum of all major states failing, Stephenson envisioned a hyper-commercialized landscape populated with an anarchocapitalistan.  It’s a pretty vibrant, if insanely chaotic, situation.  But that situation is populated with an unlimited number of micronations which almost seem to function as franchises.  Some are ethnicity based to various degrees, or philosophical, commercial, or even formerly organized crime syndicates that got even more organized.  And now, here we are bit further along on the potential path Stephenson envisioned since he wrote the book years ago.

WITH TRUMP FRANCHISING AMERICA AND HAWKING TESLA CARS AT THE WHITE HOUSE, MICRONATIONS AS FUTURE SEEMS MORE POSSIBLE

That may seem a frivolous take, but with the political chaos reshaping the world order these days, it seems almost plausible.  I mean, Donald Trump is POTUS running the United States like his own personal franchise.  That’s… a very plausible red flag.  But who knows if we’ll all end up living in a political economic landscape where we all need to be affiliated with at least two or more micronations (as franchises) to get by.  California’s 5 are pretty frivolous, yet I think they’re an interesting benchmark in that they already exist!  They are: Republic of Slowjamastan (the flag you see above), Colony of Calsahara, West Who, The Empire of Sonora, and the Respubliko de Nova Kalifornio.
