OLD HOCKEY HAIR, AKA MULLET, NOW A FOCUS FOR INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS
Hockey hair was a thing for a while, back in the eighties and nineties. You can also call that a mullet. You wouldn’t think anyone sported a mullet as a hairstyle anymore. It’s quite a choice to make. But they do. A lot of them. So many of them that there is a mullet fest. You may wonder, what have I been missing for this to be real? Well, that, and a lot. It’s in the small town of Kurri Kurri in Australia. We all kind of need to go there. It’s definitely on my bucket list. But Kurri Kurri isn’t the only place on Earth that has a mullet festival. There are many other places. Many. It’s enough to make you hair stand on end. Who knew the world had festivals like this?

There are many fun mullet categories, such as everyday wear mullet, grubby mullet, kid’s mullet and women’s mullet. It’s so scary that I’m excited, you know, like a roller coaster ride. It’s that fine line of insanity. So, let’s start with Kurri Kurri. First, that is the best name of a place to visit. Enough reason to fork over heaps of cash and fly for a million years to get there. The Mullet Fest is only 70 some odd miles from Sydney. It’s their first time! And “the best mullet of them all” will be crowned by their festival host, a hairdresser. The scene is pretty big, and everyone seems keen on their hair. It’s fashion. Not a joke. If you go, take it seriously, otherwise you may walk out with a funky haircut. Then you’ll shave your hair or wear a hat for the rest of the year.

The Mullet Fest in Kurri Kurri already has 50 entries. You can have a coiffed or hardcore mullet. But there are not as many women entering the contest, and the organizers are seeking more female applicants. It’s coming up soon if you want to compete. It’s on February 24th and this could be your next best day, ever. My cousin wore a hard-core mullet, but he died tragically due to his excessive drinking. Otherwise, I’m sure he would go. But his mullet still lives. That’s what they do. Mullets are immortal. Hence, international festivals!
