Canon Kills Last 35mm Film Camera, Heralds End of All Film Photography

CANON ENDS LAST 35MM FILM CAMERA, BRINGING THE END NEAR FOR ALL FILM PHOTOGRAPHY

If you are 25, hell, even if you are 30, you may not really know what film is. No, it’s not that stuff that becomes plaque on your teeth that you absolutely have to brush off before bed. No, film is what we used to take pictures and make movies with. For those of us who lived in a film only world, the death of film is something we’ve been aware of for years. But that slow death took a big step this week when Canon announced they will no longer sell the Canon EOS-1V. That was the last 35mm film camera Canon still offered. But forever moving forward, if you buy a Canon camera it will only be a digital device. Is this sad? Maybe a little. This heralds the end of film, really soon now. But I first knew this would happen back in the summer of 1989.

THE END OF FILM HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR 30 YEARS, THIS HERALDS THE REAL END

That’s the summer a family member in the photo industry first showed me digital equipment, namely how amazing it was that they could send a picture over the phone. It only took about 45 minutes or so, in black and white. I learned then that cameras would also be digital and developing film and printing pictures would be a thing of the past. And here we are today. But that was 10 years before Canon introduced the EOS-1V to the market. So much has changed, seemingly quickly. But while that camera hasn’t been produced for 8 years, it has been selling off the shelf ever since. That’s over now.

But don’t despair if you have one of these and want to keep using it. This camera is, after all, the fastest moving-mirror film camera ever made. Canon will still provide parts and repairs thru October of 2025. But if you don’t have one of these and want to get one, maybe look on Ebay as fast as you can. Now discontinued, the $300-$750 price range on eBay is sure to spike and never come down. But if you really are jonesing to keep the “developing” photo world alive, you an take a look at Nikon. They still sell two film models.

For now. Maybe. Their site lists them as “temporarily out of inventory.”
