NEW YORK MAN BITTEN BY TICK, GETS POWASSAN FEVER, DIES FROM BRAIN DISEASE
So it’s high summer and I fucking hate bugs. There’s no way around it. And this news just makes it all so much worse. But some bugs are much worse than others. Here in the states, we have a couple nasty spiders like the Brown recluse and the Black Widow. And yes, I know they’re arachnids. So are scorpions and we have them, too. But the worst bug of them all is the tick. Ticks do more damage by the numbers than any other biting or stinging critter. And now, a New York man is dead because of a tick bite and the extremely rare brain disease it gave him. It’s a viral disease we call Powassan Fever.

POWASSAN FEVER NOT COMMON, BUT IT’S OUT THERE SO LOOK OUT
Ticks are pretty much how humans catch Powassan Fever. But it doesn’t happen often. Yet when it does, we should all take notice. Why? Because it means it’s out there this season. But also because you can do what you can to avoid both getting bitten, and infected. But this news comes out of Ulster County. It’s the first case we know of so far in New York. But health officials say we’ve been getting anywhere from none to six cases each year.

DEER TICKS IN PARTICULAR LOVE HUMAN BLOOD, SO BE SURE TO USE BUG REPELLANT OUTSIDE
But the numbers are climbing, possibly due to global warming, aka climate change. SO be sure to do all you can to avoid getting bitten by ticks. There are a host of non-deet insect repellants you can use. So use them! Because several tick species in New York can give you Powassan Fever. Among them are deer ticks, the squirrel tick as well as the groundhog tick. These are the little bastards that pick up the virus when they bite rodent carriers. The main tick to avoid is the deer tick. But why? Deer ticks love them some human blood and like to bite us.
So be vigilant. Because if a tick bites you and gives you this awful virus, this is what you face. If you get sick, you’ll maybe have fever, headaches, vomiting and physical weakness. Some also suffer neurological infections. And yes, that’s bad. There’s a 10% fatality rate. But for the 90% who survive, they are usually left with neurological issues.
