Free! Smithsonian Releases 2.8 Million Images Into Public Domain

SMITHSONIAN RELEASES OVER 2.8 MILLION IMAGES AT ONCE INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN, FOR FREE

So do you like history?  Or how about design?  You know, playing with images.  Maybe you’re a student.  Or maybe you just like Photoshop too much in your spare time?  Well, regardless, this is big news even if you don’t.  The Smithsonian Institute has just released 2.8 million images into the public domain.  But if that seems like a lot, that’s because it is.  As you know, copyright is a bitch.  Especially in the modern, increasingly virtual, world.  All the big companies love them some control over their content.  I don’t blame them for that.  But I do mind how long they own it.  And how hard it can be to make art with images everyone finds familiar.
