TENNESEE BOOK BAN OF ART SPIEGELMAN’S MAUS BACKFIRES, NOW TOPS SALES AT AMAZON
So you may have heard a bit about the modern day purge of bad books. It’s another front on the social conservatives’ war on protecting our “culture” from bad ideas. This of course means things written by black people about anything “black.” But it also means sex, nudity and ideas that challenge being a rural rube. And Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel Maus has hit the book ban in Tennessee. And yet the ban has suffered from the also classic law of unintended consequences. Because it made people curious! And that curiosity has pushed sales of the book to the top on Amazon.

WHAT IS MAUS ABOUT? JUST THE SPIEGELMAN’S FATHER’S EXPERIENCE AS A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR
So what is this book about? Well, about Art Spiegelman’s father’s experience surviving the Holocaust. Yes, that’s right, we better ban it! Sure, the International Holocaust Remembrance Day hit a week ago. And yes, maybe those rural rubes in Tennessee could have had better timing. But it was there ban which prompted both outrage and curiosity, bringing Maus to the curious eyes of a LOT of people who otherwise would still know nothing about it. So why the ban? Well, ostensibly because it included bad language and a nude woman. Can’t have that in school libraries!

So how much of a jump in sales are we talking about as a result of this insipidly stupid rural rubes Tennessee book ban? Well, at the top! The week before they made the ban official, Maus wasn’t even in the Top 1000 of Best Sellers! Can you say, awkward? Because now not only are we talking about this, we’re reading Maus. So way to go, Tennessee! If you wanted to make sure kids never got curious about actual history like the Holocaust, you missed your mark. And bad language? Who doesn’t have cable tv? And nudity? Just lmfao. Even Broadway has known for years that the internet is for porn.
