YEARS AFTER STEPPING ON LANDMINE, FIRST NAVY VETERAN TO GET FULL PENIS TRANSPLANT
Medical technology keeps improving, which is a good thing for the most part. I am continually surprised, shocked even, when I realize that the previously impossible is now not just probable, but reality. And as a man, the idea of a penis transplant seems just impossible. But not only has a penis transplant already happened, we now know of 4 men to have undergone the procedure. And this 4th person is a Navy veteran who stepped on a landmine back in 2010, in the middle of an ambush by the Taliban in Afghanistan. As you might imagine, his injuries were very severe and life-changing.

1ST AMERICAN VETERAN, AND ONLY 4TH IN THE WORLD TO EVER RECEIVE FULL PENIS TRANSPLANT
According to an article in MIT Technology Review, this Navy veteran had somehow gotten used to his prosthetic legs over the years that followed. He would even display them proudly for anyone who wanted to see them. But as a man, it’s a little more challenging to ever get used to losing your penis. And for this veteran, he felt ashamed for 8 years. I can only imagine. And don’t want to… But then he became the 1st American military veteran to undergo a fully functioning penis transplant, and the 4th ever in the world.

BETWEEN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN, 502 MORE SERVICEMEN STILL NEED FULL PENIS TRANSPLANT
But this Navy veteran should only be the first of many. And many is not a casual projection. Between the years 2001 and 2013, 1,367 American infantrymen suffered major genital injuries in the field in Iraq and Afghanistan. You’d rightly assume that any explosion that would cause that kind of damage would be deadly. But better body armor and field triage have saved more lives. But that means an unprecedented number of survivable groin injuries. And of those 1,367 infantrymen who suffered major genital injuries, 502 of those likely also need a penis transplant.
So, 4 penis transplants in the entire world, including one Navy veteran. But with 502 more, this procedure needs to become routine. Our veterans aren’t getting any younger.
