WHY DID BANKSY CAL FOR EVERYONE TO STEAL CLOTHES FROM THE LONDON GUESS STORE?
I’m a Banksy fan. How could I not be? The artist is still somehow a mystery. Who they are, what they look like is anyone’s guess. But their work is amazing, and everywhere. How do they do what they do, and where they do it? Their art is even in Ukraine! Banksy makes people talk, and more importantly, think. The work is often provocative, and almost always cool. This guerilla artist could work designing for the biggest retailers and shops anywhere. Why they don’t is, again, anyone’s guess. But speaking of GUESS, why is Banksy telling everyone to go steal clothes at their shop in London?

LONDON GUESS FEATURED COLLECTION OF CLOTHES WITH BANKSY DESIGNS, BANKSY PISSED
I don’t really care for GUESS clothes. Personally, I think they’re overpriced and way too yuppie cliché. If I had to pay too much for a label in London, I’d far prefer Paul Smith. But GUESS has to keep churning out marketing pitches like everyone else. But the GUESS shop in London decided to steal Banksy’s work without permission. Shoot, they didn’t even ask! One of their display windows features t-shirts and jackets sporting the Banksy “Thug For Life” bunny. And then behind the clothes is a really large print of Banksy’s well-known image of a man throwing flowers. Sure, the fashion industry is a vicious wasteland of idea design thievery. But this was too much for Banksy.

So… Banksy shot out a post on Instagram saying, “Attention all shoplifters. Please go to GUESS on Regent Street. They’ve helped themselves to my artwork without asking, how can it be wrong for you to do the same to their clothes?” And I’m pretty sympathetic to Banksy here, even though that’s a brutal move. But wait, did GUESS really steal from the artist? Because this particular collection was done in collaboration with Brandalised. And Brandalised is licensed to sell Banksy’s work to fans. So what’s going on, here? Something strange, that’s for sure. The London GUESS shop closed after the call to steal, with the display window covered and security guarding the entrance.
Maybe Banksy simply prefers Paul Smith, too?
