NEW FLORIDA BILL SET TO BAN ALL DOGS FROM HANGING THEIR HEADS OUT OF CAR WINDOWS
So Florida is all about dominating the news of late. Again! Mostly it has a lot to do with their Darth DeSantis governor. But giant alligators eating old ladies walking their dogs isn’t helping. And I do mean, giant. But speaking of dogs -dogs in Florida- there’s a new state bill that seems a bit…. canine woke to me. Well, not just dogs. But the bill headlines one ban in particular that seems a bit… tacky. This ban would outlaw any dogs in Florida from hanging their heads out of car windows. And sure, that makes a certain kind of sense safety wise. But really? This is what the Florida State Legislature is focusing on these days? Really?

BESIDES CAR WINDOW, BILL ALSO BANS DRIVER’S LAP, MOTORCYCLES, AND ALL OTHER DOGGIE FUN
Florida Senate Bill 932, filed by Minority Democratic Leader Lauren Book, bans dogs from sticking any parts of their bodies out of car windows, ride in the driver’s lap, or ride on motorcycles. Oh, and dogs can’t ride on vehicle roofs, fenders or hoods. Even more? They have to be secured in a size-appropriate crate, a harness or pet seat belt, or under a non-driving (human) supervisor if unsecured. Whew! Now that is what I call some prurient political action, right there. But Florida rednecks can relax a bit. Dogs can still be in the back of a pickup truck. In a crate, of course!

CAR WINDOWS NOT ENOUGH? HOW ABOUT MAKING IT ILLEGAL TO DECLAW YOUR CAT, TOO?
Well, ok. Maybe the rednecks can’t relax too much. That pickup flatbed option also requires that the crate be secured and it has to be big enough for the dog to sit, stand and turn around in. But for all of this very careful canine safety rules in the bill, violators would only be subject to noncriminal traffic infractions. In other words, a ticket with a fine. But there’s more than just car windows in this ban! The bill would also outlaw cat declawing, and could cost vets who do the procedure their licenses, plus a fine. And the bill also makes it illegal to tether your dog without supervising it. So no more tying your dog’s leash on something when you go in to grab a quick coffee. Thanks, Florida! You’ve got your eyes on the ball! Well, maybe dog balls.
