THE JEONG GLASS BRIDGE SUFFERS PARTIAL COLLAPSE, KILLING ONE AND INJURING 3
I’ve never walked on a glass bridge. Nor have I swum in a pool with a glass bottom. In part, this is due to lack of opportunity. But as much fun as walking on a see-through substance like glass might be, I’m not sure the novelty is worth the trouble. Or the risk. And that brings us to the news of a glass bridge collapse in Indonesia. 4 people were taking pictures two days ago when tragedy struck, with of the glass panels suddenly shattering. One person died and the other 3 suffered injuries.

THE JEONG GLASS BRIDGE OPENED LAST APRIL, IN CENTRAL JAVA, INDONESIA
The glass bridge is the Geong, a 30-foot high bridge in Central Java. Two of the four people managed to hold on desperately to the bridge’s frame. But the other two fell through all the way to the ground, killing one. There were 7 other people standing on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Unfortunately, it seems that a number of tourists who have visited the bridge since it opened in April of this year had communicated concerns about how safe it was to walk on it. But for whatever reason the Geong glass bridge’s management didn’t follow up.

The Jeong glass bridge is located in the Limpakuwus pine forest in Banyumas regency, Central Java. Potential tourists who may have considered going there may reconsider with this news. But even more especially when they hear that the glass panels that shattered were really, really, thin, measuring at only 1.2 cm thick. And there are some even more concerning facts about this glass bridge tragedy. It seems that the bridge was never tested by experts, and the workers who did “inspect” it had knowledge of the tourism industry, but not construction.
It’s safe to say that investigators will find that the negligent management live in glass houses.
