New Device Reads Human Brains, Can Identify Actual Thoughts

SCIENTISTS CLAIM NEW DEVICE CAN SCAN HUMAN BRAINS AND ACTUALLY INTERPRET YOUR THOUGHTS

I’m one of those people who loves new tech, almost without exception.  Mostly, that translates as I think new things are cool, just because.  But that cool-thinking reflex has taken a hit in recent years, and this is the latest example as to why.  Scientists at the California Institute of Technology may have actually made a device that can read your brain, pretty much literally.  In other words, the device takes readings of your brain’s signals and can then identify those signals to such a degree that it can identify the thoughts in scanned brains.

WHILE THIS NEW TECH IS EXCITING, IT OPENS A DOOR TO THE FUTURE WHERE THOUGHTS ARE EXPOSED

Yes, that certainly sounds cool.  And while this is still in the nascent stages, at a minimum this lays the groundwork for a device that can translate the words a person is thinking.  For people who can’t speak, this would be an amazing gift.  There’s still a long way to go for even that to be a reality.  But the fact that this door has even been opened should give us all pause.  And I don’t even need to hear your thinking about it now, never mind have a device that’s scanning your brain, to know that you have a few misgivings of your own.

THOUGHTS READING DEVICE COULD REDEFINE LIE DETECTION, BORDER CROSSING, INTERVIEWS

Now that this door is open just a tiny scientific crack, the other possibilities to emerge when the door is thrown open include some doosies.  For one, there goes the old-fashioned lie-detector testing tech.  There could, in a few years to a couple decades, be a device that literally reads your brain as you answer questions.  In other words, it could simply skip the thin science of reading your pupils, pulse rate and sphincter response and simply look at your brain while you lie (or think you lie; that’s a totally different Pandora’s Box).

But the possibilities are endless, to border controls, job interviews, etc.  This is something to keep an eye on, so long as SkyNet doesn’t make it all moot anyway.
