UH OH, THERE’S A CONFIRMED CASE OF THE BLACK DEATH PLAGUE IN PUEBLO COUNTY, COLORADO
It’s been a while. But there’s another confirmed case of the Black Death, aka the plague, , aka Bubonic plague, in Pueblo County, Colorado. “The plague” has gotten a bit more use of late, mostly due to the Coronavirus pandemic. And since that’s still happening, I can see why. But the Black Death in large part all by itself defined Europe during the Middle Ages. Back then, it killed 20 million people. And it’s worth noting that there just weren’t as many people alive back then. In fact, it killed roughly a third of everyone alive back in the mid-1300’s.

THE BLACK DEATH KILLED ROUGHLY A THIRD OF EVERYONE IN EUROPE IN THE MIDDLE AGES
So if that proportion was something to be concerned about today, the numbers according to the US census in 2022 would be roughly 111 million dead in America. But don’t panic, as this is a single case in a state with less than 6 million people. NYC alone is far larger than that. But the Black Death still deserves plenty of caution. On the ships that delivered the plague to the Sicilian port of Messina, people at the docks discovered them filled with either the dead, or those still alive covered in black boils oozing blood and pus. In other words, the Black Death isn’t pretty, and it has a real history of being deadly.

WHY IS THE CDC MAKING A VACCINE FOR THE BLACK DEATH IF THERE’S NO CONCERN?
So where does it come from? Rodents and some other animals. Usually, the news delivers stories about how the plague was detected in variously local prairie dog populations. But it’s really, really rare for a human to get infected these days. The treatment involves timely doses of antibiotics. Timely being the key word to prevent long-term health decline or death. Another thing to note is that the CDC has confirmed that there is no current supply of a vaccine for the Black Death, though they are in development. That last to me is the most concerning. If this is so rare, why do we need a commercially available vaccine?
Maybe it’s time to go watch that old Rutger Hauer movie again.
