SWISS CHURCH HAS SUCCESS WITH AI HOLOGRAPHIC JESUS HANDLING THE CONFESSIONAL
New technology keeps making deep impacts in all sectors of our lives. And of late, AI has started to transform it entirely, though we remain slow to understands just how much and what it means. But there’s been another warning sign along that vein, with news that a Swiss church started using an AI, holographic Jesus for the confessional. For the twice-a-year folks, or those who don’t go to church at all, the confessional is like what you’ve seen on TV or movies, when people go to a priest to confess their sins, receive penance and forgiveness, and continue on their way.

THE FAITHFUL LIKING HOLOGRAPHIC JESUS IS A TROUBLING SIGN OF THINGS TO COME
While I do think confession is good for the soul as well as general health, I can’t help but be surprised at the positive reaction the AI holographic Jesus has had at Saint Peter’s Church in Lucerne. There’s no human interaction except for the confessor, with them asking questions or voicing their concerns and getting a response from an AI to represent what the son of God would say. Over two thirds of the people walking out from their virtual Jesus interaction described it as a “spiritual” experience. I can’t help but be concerned about the lessening distinction between sheep guided by a shepherd and sheep guided to slaughter.

IF TALKING TO A HOLOGRAPHIC, AI JESUS IS A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE, THEN RELIGION IS A VIRUS
The AI holographic Jesus is supposed to be a temporary installation. But this positive feedback from the religious flock is troubling on many levels. And even more problematic to me is that the Chapel says that in the near future, chatbots could take over some responsibilities from actual, real, human pastors. If we’re automating religion, and church goers are willing to fleece themselves with true belief in the divinely automated, then nothing at all is truly sacred. Think about it- if AI can so easily seed the Free World with divisive disinformation, and religion is merely a program coded to maintain our beliefs, what room is left for critical thinking among the masses?
Apparently, even less than I already thought was left. Perhaps I’ll go pray about it and see if I get an answer, if I can find a trustworthy chatbot.
