MISSING FLORIDA DOG, ATHENA, COMES HOME AND RINGS THE DOORBELL ON CHRISTMAS EVE
Pets are part of the family. So when one of them goes missing, the whole family goes frantically searching for them. And the more time that goes by, the more frantic it gets. With doubts creeping in, and a quiet sense of despair. And that must have been the situation for the family who owned (or was owned by) Athena, a Shepherd Husky mix. Athena, being part Husky, escaped from her crate and somehow left her identifying collar behind 10 days before Christmas. But in true classic holiday spirit fashion, the family was stunned when Athena came home on Christmas Eve, and rang the doorbell.

FAMILY DESPERATELY SEARCHED FOR ATHENA, WITH TANTALIZING DOOR CAM SIGHTINGS 10 MILES AWAY
Growing up, I had family pets go missing from time to time. But it was never for more than a day or two, and that was emotionally harrowing. But 9 long days? And leading right up to Christmas? That would be spectacularly hard. Especially given in Athena’s case, where other people’s door cams would catch glimpses of her. But every time her owners would get there as fast as they could, Athena was already gone and not to be found. Doing that over and over again over a week would be so defeating, especially as she was sighted as far as 10 miles away. But it seems Athena had a plan, which was to come home when she was good and ready.

NOT WANTING TO MISS CHRISTMAS DINNER, MISSING DOG MAKES HER RETURN HOME JUST ON TIME
And apparently, Athena was ready to come home just in time for Christmas. At 2 AM on Christmas Eve, Athena not only came home, she came home and rang the doorbell to be sure her family would let her back in. Now that’s the kind of Christmas gift anyone would be thankful for, especially a pet owning family. But it’s worth noting that the drama and anxiety would have been totally avoided if Athena simply had a microchip. Athena will have one soon, which is good. But if you have a pet and they aren’t chipped yet, make that your New Year’s Resolution. Like, now.
