AUSTRALIA WANTS LOCALS TO TRACK THEIR FARTS FOR THREE DAYS FOR GUT RESEARCH
Everybody passes gas, toots, and farts. And even if we’re in denial, we do this to some degree every day. It’s normal, if not socially popular. But because it’s normal, it’s important to understand them more because they are related to our overall health, starting with our collective gut. And in Australia, they actually want to try to figure out what a normal fart is to better understand how that relates to health. But how to do that? Well, to start with, you have to ask people to record their farts over a certain period of time. And they’re asking locals to do just that; track their farts for three days.

PEOPLE 14 YEARS AND OLDER CAN TRACK THEIR FARTS FOR THREE DAYS WITH A HANDY PHONE APP
The request comes from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, or CSIRO. Their target farts tracking group is anybody who is 14 years old or older. And to make that even a slightly possible idea, they’ve made an app for phones called “Chart Your Fart.” Since everyone who has a cell phone almost always has it on hand, this idea might actually work. But the app doesn’t just want you to record when you fart or how often, it also wants a log of how farts smell, how much nose they made, how long they were and of course if they stank, to what degree and how long the stank lasted.

SINCE EVERYONE FARTS EVERY DAY, IDENTIFYING A “NORMAL FART” COULD HELP WITH GUT HEALTH
While the 5th Grader in me wants to rejoice at how funny this is, it’s actually real science research data gathering with a good cause. But I’ll be curious to see how this research works out, both in terms of how many people participate, and if the data turns out to be meaningful. Well, and really I can’t help but wonder about what a normal fart is, besides all farts being normal. But if it helps us all start understanding our gut health better just by being able to contextualize our farts, that would be pretty cool.
And if it doesn’t work, in terms of data collection it would have to be described as silent but deadly.
