AVIS BILLS CAR RENTER $8,079.76 FOR DRIVING 23,000 MILES IN ONLY 3 DAYS
It’s been a while since I’ve needed to rent a car. But I certainly remember issues with the “market” making them insanely expensive, depending on the location and timing around weekends and holidays. Yet that’s when you know what you’re going to be charged, as painful as that can be. But what about when you get some pesky extra charges after the fact, and you know they’re completely bogus and have to contest them? I’ve had to do that, too. But I’ve never had to contest a bogus charge like Avis put on a car renter, for supposedly driving 23,000 miles in only 3 days.

23,000 MILES IN 3 DAYS WOULD MEAN 72 HOURS NON-STOP DRIVING AT 402 MPH
Now that’s definitely the kind of surcharge pretty much anyone would fight. Especially as the woman they charged, Giovana Boniface, got a receipt saying, “Odometer Out: 77224 Odometer In: 48170.” Sure, that seems like simple and automatic math. But here’s some more math that makes the whole situation totally absurd. For one, driving 23,000 miles in total would mean driving entirely around the world. And for another, we’re talking about a grand total of 3 days, which means this Avis car renter would have had to drive non-stop for 72 hours, and drive 402 mph. Non-stop.

AVIS IGNORED CAR RENTER FOR DAYS, RIGHT UP UNTIL MEDIA ASKED THEM FOR COMMENT
So she only discovered the extra charge when she was about to board a flight to Europe and checked her credit card statement. And that’s when she saw the $8,079.76 charge for driving 29,000 miles. In 3 days. So naturally, you’d think Avis would immediately correct the mistake as soon as she reached out to them. But you’d be wrong. Avis didn’t seem to care that she only drove a grand total of 185 miles. And Avis didn’t seem to care much at all about the math we’ve already talked about that makes that odometer reading impossible. So they ignored her for days, right up until the poor car renter contacted media.
Suddenly, Avis was really, incredibly sorry and promised a refund in just 5 days. But they never explained how this remarkable mistake ever happened. So buyer beware when it comes to Avis!
