ELPASO MIDDLE SCHOOL BANS ALL-BLACK CLOTHING, SAYS IT’S BAD FOR MENTAL HEALTH?
Schools in red states are sure doing some weird things when it comes to protecting their students. Some are protecting them from guns by making sure there are lots of guns. Then there’s how they want to protect kids from their own realized or potential sexual identities. Some even want to protect them from a healthy diet! Can’t have those vending machines interfered with, can we? But this time, I can’t follow the logic. Not one bit. Because a middle school in El Paso, Texas has banned all black clothes. Not black trench coats! All black clothes. And why? Because someone thinks that black clothes are bad for mental health.

So, to be fair, when I say all black clothes over and over again I mean just that, except that really means kids can’t wear all black. So you can wear black jeans and a different color shirt. But if you want to represent your goth side on any day, you’re now out of luck at the Charles Middle School! The news landed with parents when the school principle, Nick DeSantis, sent them a letter explaining that all black clothing was “associated with depression and mental health issues.” But you know what? It’s funny that I’ve never heard anything like that before. Like, ever.

So now I’m trying to remember just how many police forces across the USA wear all black. So maybe this is a joke? But apparently not. This is the realized culmination of a few decades (at least), of fermented stupid. The internet hasn’t helped with rampant misinformation and virtual topical mobs. There’s also something to be said about the socially conservative making hay about anything that’s really nothing. And then there’s ignoring experts, like mental health professionals. Or maybe it’s because the socially conservative think all black makes someone a witch, a devil worshipper, or (gasp) alternative?
Just imagine if there’s a prom and someone, maybe even a girl, wants to wear a tuxedo!
