WANT SOME BOOZE OR OTHER LIBATION IN ARKANSAS FOR CHRISTMAS? BETTER HURRY!
I’m often conflicted when it comes to how we can buy (and sell) alcohol to drink in the United States. Depending on where you live, it can be either a challenge or a long drive to achieve your libation. My first awareness of this “challenge” was in my college days, when the group I was with realized we wanted to get beer but had to drive 40 minutes away across a border as we were in a “dry” area. In other words, we couldn’t buy beer any day of the week there. But if you’re somewhere in Arkansas this weekend and want some rum or other booze for your eggnog, you better be sure to buy it today or your holiday will be not high and totally dry.

IT’S ILLEGAL TO BUY BOOZE IN MOST OF ARKANSAS ON ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, INCLUDING TOMORROW
Today, of course, is Saturday. Or Christmas Eve eve. But that means Christmas Eve is tomorrow, or Sunday. And since the state of Arkansas passed a bill in 2009 making the sale of alcohol on Sundays optional for communities. And guess what? Since then, only 21 of said communities in the entire state have opted in, most of them in the northwest portion of Arkansas. So in most of the state, you better get to your local option to buy some Christmas Cheer in a glass before it closes, today.

AND IT’S ILLEGAL TO BUY BOOZE ANYWHERE IN ARKANSAS ON XMAS DAY EXCEPT, ODDLY, CASINOS
And then there’s the fact that Arkansas has made it illegal for any business to sell drinking alcoholic beverages at all on Christmas Day. Not in a liquor store, convenience store, restaurant or even a bar. Though there is the very odd and interesting exception of casinos! Evidently that’s because casinos are licensed via the state’s constitution and not their Alcoholic Beverage Control. And yes, the ABC sounds a lot like an agency from behind the old Iron Curtain, but in English.
So if you are, ahem, fortunate enough to be in the state of Arkansas now thru Christmas Day and you want wine with dinner, get thee to your closest open retail venture to buy some before it’s too late!
