THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT IS DIRTIER THAN A CRACK MAYOR

Canada is just as corrupt as Zimbabwe. You often hear the neighbors of serial killers and maniacal deviants say during interviews, “But he was so nice and quiet, really polite, we never suspected a thing.” That’s Canada — the polite, quiet neighbor who is also committing unspeakable acts.

Canada is corrupt

Here are a half-dozen dirty facts about Canada that Americans might not know, brought to you by a Canadian:

1/ Dirty Thoughts: Hating the U.S. is part of the Canadian identity. The wide, sweeping anti-American sentiment is a pervasive and accepted form of bigotry. I was taught it was part of our identity in my Canadian history class in school. Prior to that course, I didn’t know that the definition of being Canadian included hating America. It predates the war of 1812. The National Post newspaper in Canada even ran the headline, “Can Obama End our Anti-Americanism?” The article’s conclusion was “no.”

2/ Dirty Oil: The Fuel Quality Directive being developed by the European Union has singled out the oil from Canada’s tar sands as being despicably dirty and hard on the environment. The EU is discouraging Europeans from using this Canadian crude, as it produces more greenhouse gas than others. Obama will announce the U.S.’s decision about the oil from Alberta’s tar sands next year. Dear Americans: when you make your decision about Canadian oil, don’t forget point number one.

3/ Dirty Winnings: The U.N. climate talks are happening right now in Poland, and Dr. Christian Holz, executive director of Climate Action Network Canada, messaged me from Warsaw last night: “Canada has just won the newly created Fossil of Disbelief award last week. Canada has been winning the Fossil of the Year award for five years straight as the country most obstructive to the collective effort of the world’s nations to agree on a comprehensive climate action treaty. The ways in which the Harper government has failed the international community on climate change are too many to count but all boil down to the simple fact that this government’s addiction to dirty tar sands oil is incompatible with any meaningful action on climate change. While Canadians know that climate change is an urgent matter and want and deserve a government that takes a lead on this important issue, the Harper government is stuck with its head in the tar sands.” Meanwhile, Canada’s top parliamentary expert on the topic, member of Parliament and leader of the Green Party Elizabeth May, was ignored by the prime minister’s office when she asked to be a delegate for Canada at the meetings. May was then invited by Afghanistan to be on their team and she accepted.

4/ Dirty Dudley Do-Wrong at Home: Canada’s horrendous record and relations with her aboriginal peoples is so bad that the U.N. has recently intervened, their expert calling it a “crisis.” One of the multiple issues that the U.N.’s rapporteur recommends the Canadian government take action upon is the large number of aboriginal women who were murdered or are missing. The Canadian government has taken a stubborn stance regarding an inquiry into the missing or murdered native women. Prime Minister Harper has repeatedly declared variations of: looking into this won’t change anything. Normally in Canada we do look into murders and missing persons. What’s that smell — could it be the toxic fumes of more bigotry?

5/ Dirty Deeds Abroad: If the Canadian government doesn’t care about murdered indigenous people in Canada, then why expect them to require corporations to be accountable for their actions abroad? Some big corporations, especially in the mining, gas and oil businesses don’t behave ethically at all: murder, massacres even, executions, poisoning local water supplies, unsafe working conditions, locals working in fear, the list of human rights violations goes on — Amnesty International’s Canadian site has the names of offending companies and countries where they committed atrocities.

6/ Dirty Pension Pinchers: Recently Canadian war vets dropped a bomb in public. The Canadian government has been dismissing soldiers just before they qualify for a full pension, at 10 years of military service. Soldiers have been sent packing just months before they’d qualify with the excuse that because they were injured, such as having a leg or an arm blown off overseas, they are no longer deployable for active service — chop, chop. Canada’s political satirist Rick Mercer just ranted about Toronto’s crack mayor, saying that voters would vote for a gerbil if it would save them a buck. However, this penny-pinching has gone too far.

I know a lot of good Canadians, but Canada is behaving badly.
