PET DUCK LEADS POLICE TO BODY OF MISSING NORTH CAROLINA GRANDMOTHER AFTER 2 YEARS
It’s been many, many years since I saw the movie Pet Detective. But as soon as I heard about this curious case, I thought, “now that’s a real pet detective!” A grandmother in North Carolina, Nellie Sullivan, disappeared two years ago without a trace. But of all things to help the police find her body, no one would have imagined a duck would bill as a hero. A pet duck, no less. At first, I thought this must be a case of a duck dedicated to its owner finally tracking down their lost loved one. But two years? And a duck? Those are long odds.

PET DUCK RAN UNDER A TRAILER TO SAD, GRUESOME DISCOVERY OF GRANDMOTHER’S REMAINS
And, sure enough, the pet duck was less an inspirational hero than an incidental one. The duck was running away with its owners chasing it. The duck decided to, um, duck under a trailer to not be that one bird in the hand and that’s when the discovery of the container with Nellie Sullivan’s body happened. Buncombe County police Sgt Walker seems to still think the duck is inspirational, saying, If I could give that duck a medal, I would.” Even in North Carolina with all its strange news, this pet duck story is a feather in the cap of strange!

HERO PET DUCK HELPS POLICE ARREST 2 FOR BEING DESPICABLE, 1ST DEGREE MURDER,
But the body’s discovery did lead to results in the police investigation into the grandmother’s disappearance. Police charged two people with 1st degree murder. Mark Barnes and Angela Wamsley, the latter being Sullivan’s granddaughter. But these charges are only the latest in a series. Back in 2020 when Sullivan went missing, police took both into custody and faced other, unrelated charges. But a year later they added another charge of concealing her death. Now 1st degree murder tops the list, thanks to a pet duck.
So what was the motive? Sullivan’s Social Security and retirement benefits, plus her prescriptions. I’m guessing a trial by jury will take the two out of public circulation for quite some time.
