CAUGHT OFF GUARD, NEVER ANY FUN
If you’re an old-school guy you’re going to hear things one way. And if you’re female-identified, you’re going to hear them a little differently. I was recently confronted with a situation that caught me off guard. But I was caught off guard because I had forgotten such interactions were still a thing. I had forgotten how many people still think in some pretty old-school, traditional ways. I live in a pretty nice bubble, and I don’t often come into contact with people who see the world so radically differently from me. I’m lucky, I guess. But this situation got me thinking about how far we still have to go.

A BAD ATTITUDE WILL GET YOU CONFRONTED WITH WORSE
What happened was, I came into contact with a man who doesn’t like me “for some reason.” Well, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell why. I’m not a…quiet…woman. I am loud and boisterous and strong. And there are MANY men who “just don’t seem to like” women like that. HUH WHAT A MYSTERY. So we proceeded to work together and have very limited communication. Like, literally hardly any, but I was ok with it. Everything was getting done, I was getting paid. Until there was a small miscommunication: an everyday occurrence.

And what does he do? He lashes out. Calls me names. Says there is, and always has been, “tension” between us. And he no longer wants to have anything to do with me, communication-wise. He wants me to keep working, sure, but he no longer wants to “deal” with me. I’m “too much.” “Too difficult.” Well, I know what ALL of that means. It means: I don’t like that this woman talks so much. I don’t like that she is so opinionated. So I don’t like how aggressive she can get. I don’t like how much respect she forces out of me and how little she makes me feel.
Maybe he’s feeling caught off guard, even now. Good. So how many women just got elected to Congress? Cause they’ve got some opinions, too.
