Diet Sodas Actually Trick Your Brain Into Being HUNGRIER

DIET SODAS ACTUALLY TRICK YOUR BRAIN AND MAKE YOU EVEN HUNGRIER THAN BEFORE

I HATE diet sodas.  All of them.  Part of this is from being a sugar junkie, because I grew up drinking soda that was actually made from sugar.  And to be fair and provide total transparency for context, I kinda hate almost all regular sodas now, too.  Because high fructose corn syrup isn’t sugar, either.  But if I had to choose, give me that syrup every time instead of diet disgustingness.  And yes, apparently disgustingness is a real word according to Word.  But besides my penultimately biased palate, it seems everyone else should shun diet sodas, too.  Because now we know they literally, chemically trick your brain into being even HUNGRIER.

YOUR BRAIN LITERALLY GETS UPSET WHEN IT DOESN’T GET THE REAL SUGAR IT WAS PROMISED

I kind of want to send this article to every friend, acquaintance and monkey’s uncle who ever argued with me about how much they love diet sodas, particularly Diet Coke.  Ugh, disgusting.  DISGUSTING.  But the whole idea of having fewer calories or less sugar shouldn’t involve setting oneself up for being hungrier, and having a brain that’s upset over not getting what it was promised.  And then, of course, maybe eating more or cheating with foods one shouldn’t be eating.  Like, an entire cake or freebasing chocolate syrup down one’s throat.  But science now says those are risks one takes for drinking diet sodas.

So how does it work, or really how does it not work?  Sucralose is an artificial sweetener that causes your brain to pump a lot more blood when you drink it.  That’s because your hypothalamus thinks it’s getting a nice delivery of sugar but got hoodwinked.  So that, in turn, increases your appetite to satisfy what your brain expected in terms of chemical satisfaction.  And then when you drink MORE Diet Coke, it makes the whole fake transaction even worse.  That’s where the risks of testing your gag reflex with a bottle of chocolate syrup go way, way up.

So don’t drink diet sodas.  They taste terrible, even worse than regular contemporary sodas, and they sucker your brain for the worse.  Maybe watch reality tv instead.  It’s still bad for you, and you’ll likely eat more regardless.  But at least you’re only being socially hoodwinked.
