Does that massive pile of dishes sitting in the kitchen sink depress you? Now that you’ve filled your belly up with good things and your digestive system is running at full throttle, the last thing you want to deal with is a bunch of dirty plates. Well, rest easy, weary soul. A Belgian design company has made all of your “no more dishes” dreams come true by creating some very stylish edible plates.
Thibaut Gilquin and Helene Hoyois, two design students from Belgium who realized what a drag it was to clean up after a big party, tinkered around with varying recipes and came up with an assortment of “100% edible, 100% ecological, 100% pleasure” food receptacles. Once they got going and perfected their edible container formula, Gilquin and Hoyois set about creating their own company, Do Eat.

With plates names ranging from “The Spoon” to “The Lotus” and “The Tulip,” which are all made from a “secret recipe based on water and potatoes,” everything in Do Eat’s verinnes (a French word for a certain kind of severing dish) collection can be chowed down after the traditional food (you know, that stuff you cook) has been polished off.
The various plates and containers on offer look like sturdy origami bowls and definitely have a chic aesthetic to their appearance. For people who like to give great dinner parties and throw in a little quirky fun on the side, these edible dishes just might be the way to go.
Now that we have dinnerware that we can eat, as well as edible underwear (a product that has been around for some time), I wonder what else the future of consumable products might bring? Digestible dental floss, comestible combs or palatable pajamas, perhaps? Maybe, if we’re really lucky, even the bags we get our groceries and fast food in will become digestible one day:
