DRY MAN GOES CRAZY, ATTACKS FELLOW CREW MEMBERS ON FISHING BOAT WITH FISH BAT
Addiction can make people do crazy things. It almost doesn’t even matter what you are addicted to. But this time, it seems to be a clear case of alcoholism with one South Carolina man who is now facing multiple charges after he assaulted two with a fish bat on a fishing boat. And the charges are serious, including two counts of assault to commit murder, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and an act of violence against a person on a vessel. It appears that the man lost his mind when the captain refused to go back to port to buy more alcohol. This addict was too dry.

MAN DEMANDED RETURN TO SHORE FOR MORE BOOZE, THEN DANGEROUS ASSAULT WITH FISH BAT
The fishing boat was the Grouper Snooper, and they were five days into their fishing trip and 50 miles off the South Carolina coast when Donald Kelly lost his mind. He had brought on two very large bottles of alcohol on board when they disembarked, but had run out. When he demanded that the captain of the Grouper Snooper go back to port so he could get more booze. The captain refused and that’s when Kelly went nuts. He then attacked another crew member with a fish bat, injuring him severely. The captain quickly called the Coast guard once they subdued Kelly.

But apparently, Kelly had started acting erratically earlier in the day. It sounds to me like alcohol withdrawal was a strong factor. He was talking to himself and seemed upset. He also threatened to kill the captain. But when the captain later refused to take him to shore for more booze, Kelly attacked holding two fish bats and the two fell to the ground. But Kelly was able to hit another crew member in the back with the fish bat, stabbing him badly. A fish bat is a handheld pole with a sideway spike or hook at the end, used to swing into and stab large fish. So a dangerous weapon to use on a person. The crew member had a bad stab wound on his back, and a collapsed lung.
Kelly, of course, claims he was acting in self-defense.
