ENGLAND GOES FULL BIG BROTHER, ENDS ALL ENCRYPTION FOR LIMEY APPLE USER DATA
Many Americans have had some qualms, shall we say, to the ever increasing reach of Big Brother looking over our shoulders in almost every way. Many of our cars are trackable, our phones are trackable (and are maybe active listening devices to boot), traffic cameras are everywhere, IPs we visit are on the menu, too. And this is all the more true in England, which has an insanely high surveillance state footprint. Far more than in America. Well, so far, at least. But now England wants all their citizen limey data, to the degree that the government there has ended encryption of cloud data for all Apple users there.

ENGLAND AS BIG BROTHER NOW JUST HAS TO GIVE APPLE A WARRANT TO GET ANY APPLE USER’S DATA
Maybe that sounds innocuous. But it’s not. At all. And if you have an iPhone, you probably have had several, as well as a myriad of other Apple devices. So you’re familiar, at least, with the idea of iCloud. iCloud is the virtual storage Apple users, ah, use to backup all of their personal data. iMessages, pictures and videos, application data, email, etc, etc. And while Apple has some other shortcomings, they’ve been pretty darn good about keeping all this personal data under full encryption. But that is over now in England. Which means that Apple itself will now be able to access and read that data. Which means they then have to give it to the English government if it submits a warrant.

WHAT WOULD AMERICA BE LIKE WITH DONALD TRUMP AS BIG BROTHER WITH NO APPLE ENCRYPTION?
In other words, the law of the land in England just killed personal privacy for Apple users. Full stop. It’s more than a little scary, considering how little oversight there tends to be about the veracity of government issued warrants. And for many people, we’re talking about years of data. So for the moment, Americans still have Apple encryption protection for their iCloud accounts. But I can’t help shuddering at the idea of America following suit. Just imagine Donald Trump as Big Brother issuing warrants to anyone he doesn’t like just to get embarrassing dirt he can publicize. It is his style, after all.
