Espoo, Finland Solves Beach Youth Problem With Classical Music

ESPOO, FINLAND POLICE KEEP PARTYING YOUTH AWAY FROM BEACH WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC

Kids these days are like kids from all days.  They can be rowdy on the random, and they can be rowdy with a certain consistency in some places.  Just ask authorities in any popular Spring Break location!  But it’s not just American college students taking themselves off-leash and losing control.  Apparently, there’s a beach town in Finland that had a near constant issue with the youth being rowdy almost every night on their local beach.  But Espoo, Finland authorities found an easy solution that totally solved it: simply blast classical music and the kids disappear!

FOR SOME REASON, BLASTING CLASSICAL MUSIC ISN’T THE PARTY LOCAL YOUTH ARE LOOKING FOR

It had become a consistent problem in an otherwise normally quiet neighborhood in summers.  The youth would throw parties every damn night on the beach, making constant noise that ruined local resident’s evenings.  But 6 years ago, Espoo police came up with the solution of blasting classical music.  At first some folks were pretty skeptical of the otherwise strange and random idea.  But it worked instantly, and still does.  According to one Espoo police officer, “For some reason, classical music doesn’t appeal to young people, and young people stay away from places where there is classical music.”

CLASSICAL MUSIC LEAVES NIGHTS CALM, WITH NO CLEANING UP AFTER KIDS EVERY MORNING

But blasting classical music wasn’t the first idea the Espoo police tried.  But nothing really worked, leaving summer nights a dreary affair for people living nearby, and piles of trash and broken glass to be cleaned up every morning.  So every June, Espoo police blast classical music from loudspeakers right around sunset to keep the as-yet uncultured youth from gathering, throwing parties and leaving a mess in their wake every night.  I’ve gotta say I’m impressed with this small, beach town police force in Finland.  Locals go to sleep every summer night with classical lullabies, and the kids are all right somewhere else.
