SHOCKING EXPLOSION KILLS SCIENTIST IN SHOCKWAVE LAB
Sometimes accidents just happen. But other times they happen at the very places they shouldn’t. How else can you think of this situation? The Indian Institute of Science’s Laboratory for Hypersonic and Shock Wave Research had just such an accident. It’s located in Bengaluru, India. Reports are that a cylinder exploded. The resulting shockwave blast threw a researcher, Manoj Kumar, against a wall. It threw him there hard enough to kill him, instantly. So the blast’s power ended up killing one scientist and severely injured three others. So how did this explosion happen in this specialized lab? We don’t know much, yet.

DEAD SCIENTIST THROWN 20 FEET INTO WALL, DEAD INSTANTLY
A security worker there, MR Chandrashekhar, told local media, “One engineer was thrown 20 feet and died instantly. The other three were admitted to hospital. It is the first time that something like this has happened in IISc.” The hospital they went to was Ramaiah Hospital. The other three victims suffered critical injuries and all needed surgery. So far, the Institute’s authorities are unsure of the blast’s cause. There were no traces of either fire or gas. But the explosion tossed absolutely everything in the lab violently. It makes no sense, so far.

So yes, of course, there is another angle to this. The dead scientist and the other three researchers were all involved with a business startup, Super-Wave Technology. The business is associated with the Institute as well. But what does SWT do? It “is engaged in research in the area of shockwaves and its applications in various fields and has several patents to its credit.” So what happened? What were the safety protocols? Did someone break them? What were they testing at the time? So if there was no gas or fire, what caused the explosion? For now, we have to wait for the answers. Forensic experts are investigating. But SWT isn’t saying anything.
