NEBRASKA FARMER AMPUTATES HIS OWN LEG, USING A POCKET KNIFE
So this guy takes the cake. But he didn’t buy the farm. His name is Kurt Kaser and he’s a farmer in Nebraska. But as can happen on farms, one day he had an accident. As he had done a thousand times before, Kaser was unloading corn. But when he stepped out of his truck, he stepped into the opening of a grain auger. So what the hell is a grain auger? It’s a sort of grain transport. But it has a component inside shaped like a giant drill bit. So when Kaser stepped into the opening, his foot and lower leg got caught. Kaser’s repeating thought was, “this is not good.” Indeed. It was so not good, Kaser amputated his own leg with a pocket knife to escape the machine. It’s the only reason he’s still alive today.

MACHINE CAUGHT HIS LEG, SLOWLY STARTED TO CHEW AWAY
So when he stepped into the opening, the auger immediately caught at his leg. It was tearing away his skin, muscle and whatever tissue the teeth could find. While Kaser was on his farm in the village of Pender, he didn’t have his cell phone with him. He narrated, “I stepped right in the damn thing. It grabbed hold of me. I can remember seeing it start and I go, ‘this ain’t good’. And then when my foot was in the there banging around, I was trying to hold my leg, pulling it out, and I said, ‘This is not good’.”

HE CUT OFF HIS OWN LEG WITH A POCKET KNIFE, JUST BELOW THE KNEE
Not good. So could anything be more of an understatement? Kaser thought he would pass out from blood loss as the machine kept pulling his leg in. “I about gave up and said, ‘Whatever happens happens. If it sucks me in all the way, it’s over with’. But then, all at once, I thought of my pocket knife.” Yup. That’s right. His pocket knife! After almost dropping the knife into the Auger, he got to work. He literally sawed off his leg, with a pocket knife, about 8 inches below his knee.

BRAVE NECESSITY, AS FARMER CRAWLS 200 FEET TO CALL FOR HELP
Somehow, Kaser doesn’t remember much pain or seeing a lot of blood. But the adrenaline was intense. After cutting off his leg (with a pocket knife!) Kaser had to crawl almost 200 feet to get to a phone. He called his son, who then called 911 for his dad. Authorities sent a helicopter to take him to a trauma center in Lincoln, about 90 miles away.
