Idaho Teacher Ordered to Remove Generic, Inclusive Classroom Signs

6GH GRADE TEACHER IN IDAHO TOLD GENERIC, INCLUSIVE CLASSROOM SIGNS ARE SUDDENLY CONTROVERSIAL

Well, that didn’t take long.  In what appears to be a new front in the “woke” culture wars, a 6th Grade Idaho teacher has been ordered to take down remarkably generic, inclusive classroom signs.  And by generic, we’re talking about SUPER generic.  But apparently, according to school and district officials, generic and inclusive signs are now controversial.  It seems that even intimating that recognizing diversity just by saying everyone is welcome in any kind of community is controversial these days.  But maybe that’s not really so shocking, considering the trickledown effect of the voices currently in control of the national bullhorn.

LEWIS AND CLARK MIDDLE SCHOOL IN MERIDIAN, IDAHO MIGHT WANT TO RECONSIDER EDICT

The teacher is one unapologetic Sarah Inama, who teaches 6th Grade at Lewis and Clark Middle School, in Meridian, Idaho.  And considering we’re talking about very general ideas of inclusion and community, we should remember two things: Lewis and Clark were notable explorers who literally mapped a large swathe an earlier America.  And meridian is the imaginary line that connects the North and South Poles.  In other words, we’re talking about contextual connections and exploration.  But for whatever reason, in January the school principal informed Inama that her inclusive signs were controversial and needed to be taken down.

IF “EVERYONE IS WELCOME HERE” IS CONTROVERSIAL, WE NEED TO CLARIFY HOW THE OPPOSITE, ISN’T

Interestingly, the two inclusive signs have been on her classroom wall since she started teaching there 5 years ago.  But the very month that Trump was inaugurated they suddenly became controversial?  Interesting, right?  So far, Inama has refused to take them down.  The two generic, inclusive signs read, “Everyone is welcome here,” with an illustration of hands in different colors; the other says that everyone in the classroom is “welcome, important, accepted, respected, encouraged, valued” and “equal.”  Oof.  Man, those sound so controversial, right?  But as the teacher noted, maybe the problem is that not everyone is welcome.  But no one wants to say that out loud.

In other words, anything that makes racists uncomfortable is now controversial, including simply saying that everyone is welcome.
