SMURF WORLD RECORD GOES FROM WELSH GEEKS TO GERMAN GEEKS
So I’m old enough to actually remember watching the original Smurfs cartoon on Saturday mornings. But I can’t attest to whether it was actually good or not! But the little Smurf figurines were definitely cool. And I had no idea that the legend of the Smurfs has continued in such a high form today. There is a world record for the most people gathered together who are dressed and painted blue as Smurfs. I really had no idea. But that doesn’t cross into my geekdom at all. But some German geeks went all in recently and seized the world’s record from some other Welsh geeks ten years ago.

DID YOU KNOW THE SMURFS GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE 1950’S, FROM BELGIUM?
But I had no idea of these two things about the Smurfs. First, they first appeared in comic strips waaaaay back in the 1950’s. Second, those comic strips were in Belgium. I had no idea Smurfs are Belgian! But that’s why you didn’t see me out there with those other 2,762 people in Germany who dressed up and painted themselves blue, all over. These Deutchen geeks made it all happen in Lauchringen, which is a German town neat the border with Switzerland. So they own the Smurf title now. But evidently it wasn’t easy to do.

Welsh students in Swansea have held the title since 2009. They managed to own the Smurf title with a gathering of dressed up blue geeks that numbered 2,510. So it actually took the Germans a bit of time to get their blue shit together. They tried this once before. But they only had 2,149 Smurf imposters show up. But last month, they finally took the title. So it seems that the rules are pretty strict. You only count as a Smurf if all your bare skin is blue and ALL your clothes are Smurf attire. So this is no mean feat. Well, unless you’re Gargamel.
