So how could this possibly work? Well, say you walk into a public space, pretty much anywhere. It could be a café or even a bar! And no, the proprietors wouldn’t even necessarily know of the danger. So you sit down. Maybe you even order a beer, or a Manhattan. So of course, you take your cell phone out to do whatever is on your mind. And, you do what’s totally normal. You put you phone down, in front of you, on the surface right in front of you. But that very surface could be the very doorway a hacker uses to get into your cell phone and all of your data. Well, it’s as simple as a hacker buying a piezoelectric transducer. And what the hell is that? Well, it’s a piece of hardware you can buy for the rich price of five bucks. And that little device can generate tiny vibrations no human can hear. And researchers tested the theory, which everyone now knows about, proving the threat. So if you were to, say, mount one of these transducers under a countertop, that’s pretty much it for installation. Then, the device can signal you phone with tiny vibrations and hack your phone’s smart assistant. In other words, it tricks your cell phone into receiving voice commands. But you can’t hear a damn thing.
So what can you do? Well, have a crazy thick case, for one. Or, simply take that napkin sitting there and put your phone on top of that. No silent vibrations will get thru that. So hack the hack, and keep your data safe!
