NEW HORIZONS TEAM NAMES DISTANT OBJECT ULTIMA THULE, CRITICS SAY IT’S A NAZI REFERENCE
Ok, this is about science and politics. The two are often intertwined. But not usually as stupidly as this time. And yes, I am aware of climate change denialists. This is stupider than that, if not really destructive at all. So you might already know that the New Horizons probe is kind of way out there in our solar system. It’s so far out there that it’s beyond even Pluto. And it’s next target is an object formerly known as (486958) 2014 MU69. Or just MU69. So yes, that really sucks for a name. So the New Horizons team received 37 suggestions for a nickname for us lay people on the ground. And the one they went with is Ultima Thule. But for some, that is kind of a Nazi name.

ULTIMA THULE IS SUPPOSEDLY BIRTHPLACE OF ARYANS, ACCORDING TO FREAKS
Say what, you ask? Yes, I say. But I said the same thing. And the more you know, the stupider it seems to be. So it seems that the term used to be used by the Nazis. And for the record, the New Horizons team knew about the association. But even that is not enough for me to condemn them over the choice. So the name Thule goes back to the Roman empire. They used it to describe a far away and icy land. It even appeared on maps. So guess what? The New Horizons team thought it was an appropriate moniker. I do, too. But evidently in far-right German mythology, that is the name of the place where the “Aryan” race began. That doesn’t sound so good. Except for the fact that NOBODY KNOWS THIS.

WHAT ABOUT THULE CAR ROOF STORAGE? IS THAT A TRAVESTY, TOO?
No, seriously, if you’re not a right-wing historian of German mythology, this is no big deal at all. And the New Horizons team decided the same. They think the primary association is from the Roman empire, not the Nazis and their stupid mythology. No, it wasn’t the name that the public voted number one out of the 37. But it was the most apt, descriptive name for a piece of rock the hell and away from planet Earth and our pantomiming BS. One thing in play here is that Ultima Thule is not yet the official name. It has to be proposed to the International Astronomical Union first. And for my part, I’ll continue to glare at every single Thule car roof storage. Every single time. But only because they’re so great and so pricey.
