Human Sewage Putting Cocaine Into All Local Marine Life

HUMAN SEWAGE IS PUTTING COCAINE INTO ALL COASTAL WILDLIFE ON ENGLISH SHORES

We keep learning more and more about just how much pollution humans put into water systems.  Just this past year, we learned that microplastics are in pretty much everything, from every single person on the planet, to the rain itself, and even recently unearthed ancient archeology sites.  But when it comes to water, we’ve managed to pollute the entirety of the oceans as well as their edges on coastlines.  And the latest discovery is that human sewage on those coast lines is putting cocaine, among other things, into ALL the local marine life.  And here I thought dirty money was shocking.

HUMAN SEWAGE CONTAINS PRESCRIPTION DRUGS,  COCAINE, HORMONES, AND MORE

This news comes from Alex Ford, a Marine Biology professor at the University of Portsmouth, UK.  He explained that on the southern coast of England, the Hampshire Langstone Harbor sewage treatment plant occasionally overloads, spilling raw sewage into the harbor.  And raw human sewage has a lot of unfortunate things in it.  We’re talking contraceptives, all sorts of prescription medicines, and things like cocaine.  But those things don’t simply hit the water system, drop to the mud, and disappear forever.  They linger and then enter the bodies of all marine wildlife.  That means things like cocaine, other drugs, and hormones change animals’ chemistry, and their behavior, too.

RAW HUMAN SEWAGE POLLUTING ENGLISH WATERS INCREASED 105% IN THE LAST YEAR ALONE

And when it comes to raw human sewage spinning into waters in England, it’s gotten a lot worse in just the past year.  A lot worse means a lot worse, with an increase of 105%.  I assume the increase is due to the change in weather patterns, causing overflow and extra untreated sewage infecting natural water systems.  But clearly this isn’t unique to England.  It’s safe to say that we will hear more reporting of cocaine, hormones and other drugs in marine life everywhere.  It’s certainly disturbing news, and we’re sure to be disturbed even more as we learn more.  You can learn more about this here.
