KARMIC HUMOR HAS ITS WAY WITH ALEX JONES AS THE ONION BUYS INFOWARS AT AUCTION
I have to admit that there is a sense of glee in writing about this. Even if your informational home is under a rock, you have heard of The Onion. It’s been a staple for ironic humor and pranks for years now, with the occasional foray into accidental prescient articles. And that same informational rock you may live under hasn’t protected you from being aware of Alex Jones’ Infowars, which in many ways was also ironic fiction, but delivered with caustic and destructive propagandistic intent. But in a case of karmic humor striking extremely hard, The Onion now owns Infowars.

COMING SOON, INFOWARS WILL BE “VERY FUNNY, VERY STUPID” INSTEAD OF JUST THE LATTER
How did this happen? Well, Infowars had to go up for auction, and The Onion was sure to be the highest bidder to get it. Alex Jones, you may remember, had massive penalties via court edict after he defamed parents of kids killed at Sandy Hook. And those penalties were costly, including his flagship media outlet which will now be totally repurposed (or possibly purposed at last) by The Onion. They have plans to end the site as it is, and retool it with content from popular internet humor writers. They described the goal as Infowars being “very funny, very stupid.”

BUT AS THE ONION ITSELF ALSO HAS NEW OWNERS, LET’S HOPE THINGS THERE DON’T CHANGE MUCH
I suppose that means the transformation just adds very funny to what Infowars has been for years. But that very funny means not destructive or misleading anymore. But there is some apprehension on my part with the knowledge that The Onion itself also has new owners, having been recently bought from private equity owners. Hopefully, The Onion won’t change all that much except for being even better at what it does. And inevitably, Infowars can only improve with a totally new team writing content to make people laugh. Dumb funny is something we’re going to need more of in the next few years.
