DISNEY FINES SCHOOL ONE THIRD OF THE PROCEEDS RAISED AT EVENT THAT PLAYED LION KING
Oh, Lion King. So I wonder how Shakespeare, whoever he/she/they are, would feel about this? Or any of the Renaissance painters? Because their work made a lot of money. But only after they were dead. Shoot, how about Walt Disney himself? He’s dead, too. But the Disney empire will let no stone, or copyrighted penny, left unturned. How do we know this? Well, we already knew this. Mostly because Disney (and Coca Cola!) benefited mightily when the United States extended their exclusive copyright licenses. But now, an elementary school knows this beyond any doubt at all. They held a “parent’s night out” event. It was a fundraiser as social event. So the school played the 2019 rendition of the Lion King to keep the kids busy, and happy. But 2 months later, Disney sent them a bill for copyright infringement.

SCHOOL HOSTED PARENT’S NIGHT OUT FUNDRAISER, LION KING WAS FOR THE KIDS
So yes, you have that correct. There’s no misunderstanding. The Disney company billed an elementary school $250, one third of the funds they raised, for illegally screening their movie, the Lion King. So how can we wrap our heads around this legal and totally unfair situation? I don’t recommend duct tape. It cost me some hair. So what happened, here? An innocent mistake. A parent bought the movie at a Best Buy. Then they played it at the event for the kids. No one thought anything of it. They certainly didn’t think they were breaking the law!

LION KING FIASCO MAY CAUSE COMMUNITY TO REVISIT 41-YEAR-OLD LAW SAVING DISNEY MILLIONS IN PROPERTY TAXES
So here’s where the Lion King may have opened up a can of costly worms for Disney. Hopefully, soon. Because way back in 1979 an initiative with the name Proposition 13 became law. So what did it do? It froze Disney’s property rates at their value from 1978!!! And guess what the loss of those millions of dollars helped to do? Underfund the public school system, including this elementary school in Berkeley, California. And now Disney comes trolling the school for $250 of their fundraiser. But they also warned that any other Lion King screening would cost an additional….. $250. Disney just might not enjoy the next initiative headed their way.
