PAINTER LUCIAN FREUD DENIES PAINTING PAINTING, ART EXPERTS TOTALLY DISAGREE
So the art world is a strange business. And, well, history sometimes makes that even stranger. This is certainly one of those times. And, for me, it’s an excuse to use the expression painting painting, and it’s not improper, only awkward. Lucian Freud is a famous painter, known for his really unflattering depictions of people, and just as much for his incredibly chaotic personal life. But there’s this painting, the Standing Male Nude, showing a naked man bending over, situated in a room with green walls and his back to, you, the viewer. Freud denies ever painting the painting. But experts say it is, in fact, a genuine Lucian Freud.

LUCIAN FREUD TRIED TO BUY PAINTING FROM COLLECTOR REPEATEDLY, BUT WHY?
So evidently, Freud really wanted this painting (back) in his possession. The collector who first bought the painting 25 years ago had to repeatedly rebuff calls from Freud asking to buy the painting (back). Freud offered to double the purchase price. So it’s clear that Lucian Freud wanted this painting off the market, presumably to make it disappear forever. Well, that didn’t happen. And Freud told the collector he’d never be able to sell it to anyone else. And his estate promptly refused to ever authenticate the painting as Freud’s.

ART INVESTIGATORS NOT ONLY SAY PAINTING IS A LUCIAN FREUD, THEY SAY NAKED MAN IN PAINTING IS LUCIAN FREUD
So here is where it gets really interesting. Not only did art investigators determine that the painting is a real Lucian Freud, they believe it is a self-portrait. Yes, that’s right. The man bending over naked with is back to an infinite audience is, in fact, the artist himself. Not only can you never go home again, you can’t ever get your backside back. Off the market, that is. The other famous artist Francis Bacon asked Freud to paint this for him, and it used to hang in Bacon’s apartment. With the now very public furor over the painting, Lucian Freud’s painted backside is sure to be more valuable a commodity than it ever would have been otherwise.
Some people really need to learn how to turn the other cheek.
