RESEARCH INTO MIRROR LIFE COULD KILL US ALL, AND EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE PLANET, TOO
As someone very curious and interested in technological advances, I’ve also tried to be aware of technologies that don’t -quite-exist yet. Because like the atom bomb, new technologies and discoveries can change everything we thought we knew about the world. And we are on the cusp of quite a number that could change things more than we want to imagine, for the worse. Of those, the one I thought was the most potentially dangerous was poorly programmed nanotechnology that could literally eat the world into nothing but grey goo. And while that’s terrifying, we now have something more proximate that could kill absolutely everything on the planet: Mirror Life.

MIRROR LIFE WOULD BE “DESIGNED” IN LITERAL REVERSE TO OUR DNA, RNA AND AMINO ACIDS
I am, quite frankly, astounded that I don’t know more about this. But a brief explanation includes understanding that all life as we know it on planet earth is homochiral. That means that DNA and RNA are made from “right-handed” nucleotides, with proteins being made from “left-handed” amino acids. Essentially, it’s the literal foundational order of how the cells of life are organized. But scientists, being the curious and occasional buffoons that curiosity can elicit, are exploring how they could possibly make lifeforms from a base that is a total mirror. That means reverse the right and left above. But this Mirror Life could really kill everything it comes into contact with.

WE WOULD HAVE NO DEFENSE WHATSOEVER TO A MIRROR LIFE VERSION OF THE COMMON COLD
Supposedly, no one has made it very far with this curious, possible Armageddon causing research. But with the way things are going, especially with AI, we’re likely not too far away from it being a much more possible reality. And should someone, say, create a Mirror Life version of something simple like the common cold, that alone could kill us all. Because all our defense mechanisms are geared in reverse, making our immune systems essentially irrelevant. And it’s entirely possible that an evolving Mirror Life infection could kill all life on the planet as an outsider plague even the Bible didn’t mention.
