FIRST TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY MOUNT FUJI HAS NO SNOW CAP IS HAPPENING NOW
Even if you don’t know much about Japan or Japanese culture, you have at least heard of the famous mountain, Mount Fuji. And inevitably, you have probably seen the famous painting, 36 Views of Mount Fuji, even if you can’t remember where or how. That’s how famous the mountain is, that almost all of us know it, even if we don’t know it. But part of its famousness is from its own, unique image and shape. Yet now the famous mountain has been without a snow cap at its top for longer than ever before in human history, another visible testament to climate change.

A NORMAL, SNOW CAPPED MOUNT FUJI IS NOW DAYS AWAY FROM BEING A MONTH LATE
And talking about human history, I really mean as long as we’ve paid attention. In the case of Mount Fuji, we’ve only been paying attention to its snow cap for the last 130 years. Usually, traditional weather patterns end up putting snow on its cap by early October. And yesterday being Halloween means today is November 1st, and that’s a pretty significant change that should be another warning sign we’re not doing enough to stop, or at least slow, climate change. Just a year ago, Mount Fuji didn’t have a snow cap until October 5th, 3 days later than its average.

A SNOWLESS MOUNT FUJI IS ANOTHER SIGH IT WAS THE HOTTEST YEAR FOR THE WORLD IN 2024
But in just two days, we’ll be a full month after the average. But it’s not a total surprise, as Japan just had its hottest year on record (and yes, that means human history). Then again, the entire world just had its hottest year, ever. Just two days ago, the Mount Fuji area had a high temperature in the 60s and lows only in the 50s, Fahrenheit. Take a look at the mountain’s very own weather forecast, which still includes climbing conditions for a climbing season that ended in September.
