State of New York About to Ban All Smartphones in Schools

NEW YORK PLANS TO MAKE A LAW TO BAN ALL SMARTPHONES IN SCHOOLS, AT LAST

Well, that took long enough.  Kids bringing smartphones to school was never a good idea.  And considering the young age of kids I see with newer model phones than I have, I can’t imagine the challenges teachers face in keeping their students’ attention.  Want to be distracted?  There’s an app for that.  Or thousands of them.  Want to be constantly social with messaging?  A smartphone provides infinite possibilities.  Want to cheat on a test?  Just be sneaky with your connected smart watch.  So at last, a major (Empire) state, New York is about to ban all smartphones from schools.

WITH PARENTS’ SCHOOL VIOLENCE CONCERNS, DUMBPHONES WITH NO APPS WILL BE ALLOWED

But for all the remote-helicopter parents out there, don’t get your knickers in a twist.  New York schools will still allow dumbphones.  Evidently that means cell phones that can make and receive calls and messaging.  But none of those myriad of apps that can distract the most monotonous stone.  New York Governor Hochul will launch the smartphone in schools banning bill this year, with the bill hitting the next legislative session which starts in the new year.  Presuming the bill becomes law, kids will have to actually work harder to not pay attention in the classroom.

WHAT WILL THE TECHNOLOGY LOBBY DO TO TRY TO PREVENT THIS MAJOR STATE BAN?

I can’t imagine what I would have been like as a student with a smartphone, as I was the kid sneaking to read a novel under the lip of my desk whenever I could.  But I also can’t really imagine with any meaningful accuracy what it would have been like to always be able to make a phone call.  The only option in high school was a payphone in an echoey lobby that almost never worked.  But smartphones are the great distractor at any age, and it just might be a good thing to curb their use a bit for younger folks.

Now, we’ll just have to see what the technology lobby does to prevent this bill from getting passed.  For them, that’s at least 6 hours of lost revenue every school day.
