WHAT!?! TOO MUCH NAPPING CAN LEAD TO AN EARLY DEATH? THIS NEWS IS EXHAUSTING
I’m going to have trouble wrapping my head around this finding coming from England. A recent study has found that people who nap too much can suffer an early death. I’ve always thought of naps as the be-all end-all solution to too much stress, fatigue and bad tv. So to be fair I’ve never had the opportunity to get many naps so far in my life. But it seems to be counter-intuitive that taking a lot of naps could hasten your strides to the grave. But the study found a link between a lot of napping and high blood pressure and stroke. This is disturbing news!

IN GROUP OF 350,000, TO MUCH NAPPING RELATED TO HIGHER RATES OF STROKES, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
The study reviewed the napping habits from a fairly large group of people in England. In a group of 350,000, daily nappers had a 25% higher chance to suffer strokes, and 12% more likely to have high blood pressure, than people who didn’t take naps. And yes, the study had already excluded people who had Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep disorders and worked overnight shifts. Those are all pre-existing high-risk factors that can cause hypertension. So how can this be? Is it that napping is literally bad for you? Or is there some other association with people who nap a lot?

BUT! NAPPING PEOPLE TEND TO ALSO BE SMOKERS, DRINK, SNORE, AND ARE AWAKE AT NIGHT
Well, fortunately it seems to be the latter. The study also found a relationship with napping people and other lifestyle factors that likely explain this early death napping relationship. People who take a lot of naps also tend to be smokers, drink a lot, have chronic snoring, and tend to be awake a lot at night. So I can rest a little bit at ease, even if it’s not a nap. I don’t smoke, drink a lot, and mostly only snore because allergies. I’m also too tired at night to be a night owl. So if I can fit napping into my schedule, I will! Just like professional athletes, right?
