IN TAIWAN, NOROVIRUS IS TEARING THRU THE BOWELS OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS IN A BROWN TSUNAMI
Norovirus is clearly not a fun thing to catch. And besides how miserable it can make you feel, another big problem is that it is very catchy. While contagion is by definition a lover of more company, Norovirus is laying waste in Taiwan like you wouldn’t believe. And that turn of phrase will make sense, all too soon. Because we now know that in just the first week of February, more than 300,000 people in Taiwan looked for medical help with diarrhea at emergency and outpatient services. 300,000 people in the same geographic population with diarrhea is a lot of laying waste, a veritable brown tsunami.

BESIDES OVER 300,000, TAIWAN ALSO HAD NOROVIRUS RELATED “DIARRHEA CLUSTER INFECTIONS”
And yes, this has set a record in Taiwan in the last decade. And over the last month, Taiwan also saw a 5-year number high with 400 “diarrhea cluster infections.” But that last quoted term is not something I’d ever heard of before, and I’m appalled it even exists. But in the last month, Taiwan had 400 of them! And yes, those cluster infections were all related to Norovirus as well. But more disturbingly, the majority of them happened in the restaurant and hospitality industries there. That sure sounds like a good reason to cook your own food at home to me for a while, wherever Norovirus is a factor.

NOROVIRUS IS EVERYWHERE, AND AMERICANS MIGHT WANT TO START TRACKING THE BROWN TSUNAMI AT HOME
But while the brown tsunami in Taiwan is pretty scary, Norovirus is (s)hitting everywhere. 152 passengers on a cruise ship that sailed out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida came down with it recently. But it’s everywhere, and if you’re here in the United States and want to track it, going to the CDC won’t offer much information, as local municipalities and states aren’t required to report case data. And with Federal pink slips flying these days, that will get worse. So not ironically, the best way to see if you’re in the brown tsunami’s path is to track wastewater, which you can easily do(o) at WastewaterSCAN.
