RINGWORM FUNGUS IS USUALLY JUST A MILD NUISANCE, BUT THIS NEW ONE COULD REQUIRE EXTRA TREATMENT
If you’re not familiar with ringworm fungus, it’s a pretty inclusive description of fungal infections that could involve your skin, hair, even your nails. The name makes you think of what you see in the picture above, which looks like a ring of sorts. But don’t be more freaked out than you need to be, as worms aren’t actually involved at all with these infections. But this new hookups in the Big Apple problem is a new variety entirely, and it has 5 confirmed cases already with those who are a bit “socially” active. This new one is called Trichophyton mentagrophytes ITS genotype VII, or TMVII. Designations like that always sound more officially scary.

Usually, a ringworm fungus infection is just a mild annoyance to most. But this one appears to have spread in NYC primarily thru sexual hookups. That isn’t unique to different types of these infections, though it’s pretty rare. Until now, that is. This new ringworm fungus has only been seen in some parts of Europe and Asia, until these new cases appeared with some sexually active cisgender men who like to have sex with other men. Fortunately, all 5 were successfully treated, though some of them needed several courses of antifungal medication.
