HOW DID THE NYC SKY TURN SUCH A CRAZY, DEMONIC BLUE WITH THE ELECTRIC EXPLOSION?
So if you were under a rock last week you maybe didn’t hear about the crazy, craaaazy explosion that happened in Queens. That’s when a Con Edison substation in the fairer borough went BOOM and knocked out power at LaGuardia Airport. But the massive bug zapping flare was incredibly huge. It was so big it turned the NYC sky a spooky, demonic blue. It was so big that it was in the line of sight of hundreds of thousands of people. Sure, it’s NY. But I’ve never seen anything like that before, except on the big screen. And what’s bigger than the sky?

CON ED TWEETS HUGEST UNDERSTATEMENT EVER, ZAP
The fantastical aquamarine was truly unprecedented. But even Con Ed played the dry, ironic tone just after the explosion. They tweeted, “There was a brief electrical fire at our substation in Astoria which involved some electrical transformers and caused a transmission dip in the area.” That’s like saying when Godzilla farts, locals downwind might experience a sudden spike in warm, high pressure. But anyways, we’ve all seen arc flashes, if only in a tiny, brief form. But anytime you’ve seen a welder and the flash is blue, that means they’re using an arc welding tool. So what about the giant scale in NYC?

GIANT CORONA MADE THE DEMONIC BLUE, FROM A GIANT ELECTRIC ARC
Well, the blue color is what happens when you’ve got really excited air molecules. Just like in high school labs, different, “excited” gases would show different colors. Peter Sauer is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois. He put it in easy, simple terms. He said, “It’s a corona. It happens whenever there’s an arc. There’s a bluish light that comes off of corona discharge on high-voltage transmission lines, especially when it’s humid. It’s the ionization of the air.” Ok, sure, that maybe sounds like an anti-climax. But maybe take another look at pictures of this thing. It was, and is, crazy ass shit.
