BULLS FAN SHOWS THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS SOME LOVE
Disclaimer: I’m a Spurs fan. So I need a feel good story this year the way their season is going with the mysterious injury that has kept Kawhi Leonard sidelined for virtually the entire season. But yes! Kawhi may return to the court in the next few days. We’ll see if they can survive and make the playoffs! But now I know that there’s another Spurs fan out there. And his name is Barack Obama. At the MIT Sports Analytics conference, Obama expressed his appreciation of the San Antonio Spurs franchise as the place to go if he was a free agent. YES!!! We all know former President Obama is no dummy.
EVEN OBAMA WANTS TO SIGN WITH SPURS AS A FREE AGENT
The Spurs are a storied franchise. Many hold them up as the bar for excellence in ALL of professional sports. Most of that has do to with the now retired Tim Duncan. Duncan is and will continue to be one of, if not the, best power forwards of all time. But Duncan allowed the Spurs Coach Greg Popovich to….coach him. Pop could scream at him and hold him accountable. That meant that the entire team’s culture was based on everyone being accountable. Obama clearly appreciates that dynamic over the many years of the Spurs’ success. But, of course, Obama gets to be a public fan while his hometown team the Chicago Bulls….suffer thru a transition season with not so much success.

OBAMA LOVES THE CULTURE, HISTORY AND REAL CHEMISTRY
“They’re smart, they’re well-run, they’re focused on team,” Obama said. “They treat everybody in the organization with respect, and that is the kind of organization that I want to be a part of. So I would say that over the last 15 years in basketball, San Antonio would be a great example of that.” Go figure! Obama knows a little something about the importance of team building and chemistry. But especially what it means to be successful during trying times with a horde of detractors.
POPOVICH LOVES CHAMPIONSHIPS AND GOOD WHITE HOUSE VISITS
Popovich clearly loved what he heard from Obama when he heard about his comments. But they have already met in person, so that’s not a huge surprise. The Spurs met Obama at the White House in 2015 when they paid a visit celebrating their Championship victory over the Miami Heat the previous summer. But, just like the Heat recently, don’t expect the Spurs to make that visit while that other small handed guy remains in residence!
