2024 PARIS OLYMPICS WILL FEATURE FULL-ON, COMPETITIVE MEDAL SPORT YOU MAY KNOW AS BREAKDANCING
So some good news is finally in the offing. There really hasn’t been enough in the year 2020. But even though this good news is something that won’t be actually really happening for almost 4 years, the anticipation it will bring is. I mean, it already is. You’ll feel it too in short order. Fast enough to make your head spin. Upside down. Well, maybe not. But for others, it will literally be true. And for a select winner/winners, it will be gold. As in, Gold. Olympic Gold. Because we now know that the 2024 Olympics in Paris will be the first ever to include the competitive sport, Breakdancing.

BREAKDANCING IS SERIOUS, YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE THE CHOPS TO DANCE WITHOUT BREAKING YOURSELF
Yes, and finally. I can remember New York City, “back in the day,” when breakdancing was an emerging force. Back in the early to mid-1980’s, you might have seen it virtually anywhere. There were battles, performances, even guys just practicing on their own. All you needed was a flat surface, and likely the right king of cardboard to spin on just right. Well, and skill. Lots, and lots of skill. Because spinning on your head upside down isn’t a joke. You’ve gotta have serious skills, athletic ability and strength with coordination. And back then, depending on where you were, you had to have backup. But that was breakdancing back then.

NOW AN OLYMPIC SPORT AT LAST, WILL BREAKDANCING’S ROOTS AND “PURITY” DISAPPEAR? (UM, NO)
But now, breakdancing is an official, Olympic sport. That means battles on the international stage. Lots of people watching. And medals. Gold, Silver, Bronze. So right now, there are people who are training to qualify as breakdancing Olympic athletes. They want to be in Paris. And they ALL want to be the first one to win it all in the historic introduction of their sport. Well, ok, it actually debuted as a sport in the 2018 Sumer Youth Games in Buenos Aires. But the first adult breakdancing medal event will be in downtown Paris, alongside sport climbing and 3-on-3 basketball at Place de la Concorde.
I just tried to do the worm in honor of this news for the first time in 30 years. Big mistake. Huge. Back to the recliner it is for me.
