MAN IN CHILE DISAPPEARS AFTER PAYROLL ERROR PAYS HIM 330 TIMES HIS SALARY
So this sounds like a dream job, if only for the last paycheck. A man in Chile was the beneficiary of a payroll error. And we’re talking one whopper of a payroll error. The man was a dispatch assistant at the cold meats manufacturer Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos. His normal paycheck is about $545. But the payroll error was about 330 times his normal salary. He got paid over $180,000! So I’m not sure what most people think they would do if this happened to them. But I’m pretty sure they’d do exactly what this man did, as he disappeared.

MAN FIRST NOTIFIED HIS MANAGER OF THE INSANE PAYROLL ERROR, THEN HE DID THE MATH
At first, the man did what most of us think we would do, seemingly the right thing. When he saw the huge sum of money, he made sure to let his manager know about the rather large payroll error overpayment. But then I’m pretty sure he did the math on this. Or his family did, or anyone he told about it besides his manager. If he got paid every two weeks, that paycheck represents almost 13 years of salary. At once! If he got paid every month, we’re talking 26 years of salary! That there is what you call an easy excuse to jump right into early retirement.

PAYROLL ERROR WAS ENOUGH FOR EARLY RETIREMENT, AND MAN RESIGNED THRU HIS LAWYER
But the manager of course reported the issue to HR, who in turn asked the man to return the money. The man agreed, saying he would do that the next day. But, of course, he didn’t. He kept the money, and ignored all attempts at communication from his employer for several days. And he lawyered up, having his lawyer send his resignation letter. And, well, no one has heard from him since. I can’t say as I blame him! If I suffered such an egregious payroll error, I’d be looking at over $20 million!
