JUST A SMALL EXPLORATION OF PSYCHEDELICS CAN HELP PEOPLE LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR SEXUALITY
Psychedelics aren’t a genre of mood-altering drugs I have much experience with. But to be fair, my straight edges are still rather sharp no matter how cosmopolitan I think I am. But straight edges aren’t necessarily “all that” anymore, even though contemporary politics in America seem to be pointing in a more than classic binary direction to such a degree that Mother Theresa might rebel. So it’s almost awkward timing to get more information as to how psychedelics can help people get more in touch with their sexuality, which isn’t a totally binary identity no matter the individual.

OF THE 581 PEOPLE IN THE STUDY, MOST SAID PSYCHEDELICS HELPED THEM LEARN MORE ABOU THEMSELVES
The latest edition of The Journal of Sex Research lays out, as it were, how psychedelics take people on an inner trip that helps them connect both with their own self-awareness sexually, but also with partners and others. 581 people took part in a survey to generate the data for the study, with an amazing number, 70%, saying that they experienced changes in either their sexuality or their intimate relationships after a brief experience with psychedelics. And generally, most of those people said the changes were a good thing. The responses included reports of better sex, deeper connections with partners, and more openness to exploring their “authentic selves.”

And 10% of those in the study reported that their experience with psychedelics had an impact on their awareness of their own gender identity, some with an awareness of going back and forth between feminine and masculine, and some even saying they felt liberated from binarism itself. And if you’re old-school scared of anything other than binarism and heterosexuality, there’s no need to panic. Psychedelics won’t make you gay. But clearly they can help you connect with denied corners of your own identity, and make you feel more comfortable with yourself and your feelings.
Sexuality isn’t simple for anyone, and it’s clear that many of us are in denial of that in general. Here’s to hoping that we get to learn more about how psychedelics can help us all with self-discovery before the current political wave makes it all illegal.
Again.
