IN A WELCOME TWIST, A RACIST THREATENING A TAMALE VENDOR GETS A HAPPY ENDING
Bigots like these are why we can’t have nice things. That is almost always how it feels and, in fact, is. But this is one of those times when there is a happy, or at least happier, ending. This latest when bigots attack episode is from San Pedro, California. A Mexican street tamale vendor has been selling his tamales there for over five years now. But a few weeks ago, he was harassed by a threatening racist he had never seen before. This Long Beach (presumably) resident was screaming bigoted vulgarities, making threats and nearly committed assault.

TAMALE VENDOR STARTED RECORDING WHEN RACIST RESIDENT APPROACHED HIM WITH CLOSED FISTS
The tamale vendor is Juan Aguilar. His business’s name is Tamales El Primo. He started recording the encounter when the local racist man approached him, screaming and with closed fists. And if you watch the video I’ll include below, you’ll hear some bleeped out portions. I’ll translate those here. The man said, “Tamales! Tamales! Tamales! Get your fucking wetback ass outta here. Son of a bitch. I’m going to get you, you motherfucker.” Charming, right? And you’ve just got to know that if a minority person approached this racist that way, he’d shoot them dead and likely not even get prosecuted.

VENDOR ACTIVIST ORGANIZED A COMMUNITY BUYOUT, WITH OVER 2,000 TAMALES SOLD
Regardless, Aguilar had his wife post the video on social media where it quickly went viral. That’s when a street vendor activist, Edin Alex Enamorado, saw the video and quickly organized a community buyout to support the aggrieved tamale vendor. And buyout they did, quickly selling him out of the 500 tamales he had on hand. He got family to resupply and it’s a good thing he did. At the end of the day, he sold 2,000 tamales! And that there is the happy ending (so far) to this otherwise dreary story. Neighbors identified the bigot as one Chris Shelby. And guess where the buyout happened? Right outside Shelby’s house. Now that’s picture perfect.
