FORGET TRUMP, RUSSIAN BOTS WANT TO KEEP GENERAL HUX ALIVE IN STAR WARS
Ok, now for some weird Russian news. No, this isn’t about politics, Trump, the election, assignation or the like. But it is related to the use of Russian bots on social media to influence a particular outcome. Yet this time it’s about Star Wars! But what is it that the Russian bots coordinated to influence? Well, it’s odd, but the effort was to make sure that General Hux’s character survives the current trilogy of films. How crazy is that? This came to light in the new Star Wars documentary by Anthony Wonke, The Director and the Jedi. Russian bots tried to influence Disney and Lucasfilm to keep General Hux alive.
HUNDREDS OF ACCOUNTS AIMED AT DISNEY AND LUCASFILM TO SAVE GENERAL HUX
The 90-minute documentary is target rich for Star Wars fans. But in one scene it captures director Rian Johnson speaking at a production meeting telling everyone how there was a massive attempt to sway the production on social media. And what did these Russian bots want? General Hux must survive. “It’s amazing,” Johnson said. “There’s a coordinated effort by these Russian accounts. Hundreds of them.”

#HUXLIVE A SHOUT OUT TO AUTHORITARIAN LOVE, PUTIN DOES MORE PUSHUPS
We all know that things are changing faster than we can keep up with in terms of social media. In fact, things have already changed a great deal and we’re trying to understand after the fact. But I suppose it is worth noting that General Hux and Donald Trump are both larger than life authoritarian figures. So what’s with the Russians and authoritarians? Tradition, I suppose. But the coordinated bot effort targeted Lucasfilm and Disney with hashtags like #HuxLive to keep the snooty, power hungry general alive.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS TO HUX? IMPEACHMENT? LOL
For now, General Hux lives. If he survives the Star Wars karma coming his way in the trilogy’s finale, I don’t expect his Russian fans will be too happy his hoist petard. But does he live? Or does he get squeezed out in say, a garbage compactor? We’ll just have to wait to find out.
