I remember driving on long trips years ago, before every car had a direct phone interface, and wearing a single earbud for phone calls or an audiobook. And no less than 3 different cops or troopers urgently gestured at me to lose the earbud from the next lane over. I remember thinking, what the hell? And time has passed and it’s pretty much everyday you know you’re sharing the road with people looking at their phones as they drive. And by everybody, I mean everybody. But this story of a Florida cop watching porn on his phone who then slammed into a car stopped for a school bus makes it clear. Everybody.

Now I must admit to making text messages while at a stopped light. But not when I’m driving the car. And if I’ve gotta make a phone call, I use the dashboard or Siri to do it. Because a split second is all it takes for something to go wrong, or even tragic. But who the hell is watching porn, on their cell phone, while they drive a car? In this case, it’s one Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Tristan Macomber. And he tried to lie about it, despite the fact that his own bodycam was on at the time and captured not only the crash, but the moments and seconds leading up to it.

FIRST THE COP WATCHING PORN TRIED TO BLAME HIS BRAKES, BUT HIS BODYCAM TOLD ANOTHER STORY

At first, he told investigators that his brakes locked up when the car in front of him stopped for a school bus. But the bodycam footage clearly showed he was holding his phone and was distracted before the impact. Eventually, Macomber admitted that he was watching porn on his phone while driving his police vehicle, and driving it into a car stopped for a school bus. Just imaging if there hadn’t been a car stopped in front of him. He would have slammed into the school bus, or kids getting on or off of it instead. Macomber, not surprisingly, is no longer a cop (so far).

He lied about a traffic incident, he was watching porn on the job (and while driving), and he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
